Capsiplex Clinical Studies
Study Summary:
The Effect of a Capsimax™ Plus Blend on Energy Expenditure Before, During and Following Low Intensity Exercise Investigated in a Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind, Crossover
Several studies conducted over the past 30 years demonstrate the potential of Capsicum (red hot peppers) and Capsaicinoids (their active ingredients) as a safe, effective nutritional supplement for weight loss and fat burning. The current study was undertaken to determine the effects of Capsimax™ Plus Blend, consisting of Capsicum extract vegetarian beadlets, bioperine (black pepper extract), niacin (vitamin B-3) and caffeine, on various metabolic and safety parameters relative to control (placebo).
Study Design
Twenty-five healthy subjects of both genders, who were between 10 and 30 years of age and were already in the habit of exercising moderately each week, participated in this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study. The subjects took either Capismax™ Plus Blend or a placebo. They served as their own control group, as half the group took Capismax™ Plus Blend on one day and then a placebo on a subsequent visit and the other half took the placebo first, then Capismax™ Plus Blend. There was a washout period of one week between the two sessions. Subjects were monitored during four periods: a resting baseline period of 30 minutes prior to dosing, a resting period prior to exercise of 60 minutes, a 60-minute period of moderate exercise (walking on a treadmill) and a resting period of 50 minutes after exercise. Subjects’ energy expenditure, oxygen uptake, ventilation, respiratory quotient, perceived level of exertion, heart rate and blood pressure were measured at set intervals in all four periods.
Results
When subjects took Capsimax™ Plus Blend one hour prior to exercising, they burned three times more calories before, 3% more calories during, and 12 times more calories for up to an hour after exercise compared to when they took a placebo. This increase in metabolic rate resulted in an average cumulative total of 278 more calories burned before, during, and after exercise compared to placebo.
Given the notable increase in energy expenditure following treatment with Capismax™ Plus Blend, it is not surprising that other metabolic parameters related to energy expenditure also.
Confidential
Subjects taking Capismax™ Plus Blend also experienced 7.5% greater
oxygen uptake during the exercise period and greater air flow through the lungs during the post-exercise period than those taking placebo. Despite the fact that Capismax™ Plus Blend takers were expending more energy than placebo takers, they did not perceive they were exerting themselves more.
Safety
Heart and blood pressure rates were slightly higher when taking Capismax™ Plus Blend versus placebo, but these differences were judged to be of minor if any clinical importance by the experimenters.
Conclusion
This study showed that after ingesting Capismax™ Plus Blend, subjects experienced a higher degree of energy expenditure than after taking a placebo. This greater energy expenditure occurs after dosing but before exercise, during exercise and after exercise. Subjects taking the Capismax™ Plus Blend also experienced an increase in oxygen uptake and ventilation. Capismax™ Plus Blend was found to be a safe, effective nutritional supplement for speeding metabolism and increasing calories burned.
